MEDICAL AND REHABILITATION BENEFITS:
The accident benefits insurer is required to pay for medical and rehabilitation expenses and attendant care. Insurance policies in Ontario now combine Medical Rehabilitation with Attendant Care coverage. The amounts available for Medical and Rehabilitation/Attendant Care benefits depend upon the coverage you purchased as well as the classification of your injury. The amounts of coverage are generally as follows:
- $3,500 if you suffer a Minor Injury
- $65,000 if you suffer a non-catastrophic injury. If you purchased optional coverage, the amount increases to $130,000, if you suffer a non-catastrophic injury.
- $1,000,000 if you suffer a catastrophic injury.
As provided above, there are significant differences in available coverage depending upon the classification of your injury. Also, benefits for non-catastrophic injuries are only available for a maximum of 5 years for adults.
Under these benefits, your auto insurer may be responsible for expenses incurred for various forms of treatment such as:
- chiropractic, psychological and occupational therapy,
- medication, prescription eyewear, dental devices and medical aids,
- medical, hospital and nursing care,
- transportation to and from treatment sessions,
- social and vocational rehabilitation,
- family and social counselling,
- home renovations and vehicle modification

ATTENDANT CARE:
Following a serious motor vehicle accident, you may be unable to carry out personal care activities, such as grooming, bathing, meal preparation and more. If this applies to you, you may apply to have your insurer pay for expenses incurred to hire an attendant to assist accident victims with these activities. In order to qualify for this benefit, car accident victims must (1) suffer more than a mere “Minor Injury”; and (2) have an occupational therapist assess a victim’s attendant care needs and submit an assessment and accompanying form to the auto insurance company. If you do qualify for this benefit, then you will have access to a combined medical rehabilitation and attendant care benefit of $65,000.
